The people who stay through summer know something the rental crowd does not: this is when Riomar behaves most like the neighborhood it was built to be. The oaks are heavier, the parking is easier, and everything worth doing sits inside a fifteen minute loop from the mailbox.
That loop is the thesis of this post. Riomar's real amenity is not any single restaurant or beach access. It is the density of small, specific places arranged along a two mile stretch of barrier island that residents can reach on a bike, a cart, or a slow walk. Summer is when that geography pays out. What follows is a working guide to the season, organized the way a Riomar day actually unfolds.
The Golf Cart Radius
Start with the boundary. Riomar sits north of Vero's oceanside shopping district, with sandy oak-lined streets and easy access to the Ocean Drive strip by cart or bike. Riomar Beach Park sits at the end of Club Drive with restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a playground, and it is the closest sand for most residents. From that pin, almost everything in this guide is under two miles.
That compactness matters more in July than in February. When the humidity settles in around three in the afternoon, the question is not what is open, it is what is close enough to reach without moving the car twice.
Mornings Belong to the Market and the Garden
The Ocean Drive Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings and is the anchor of a Riomar weekend. Locals treat it as a standing appointment, then peel off in one of two directions.
The first is Waldo's Secret Garden, open Saturdays and Sundays, with eclectic antiques on the grounds and local art for sale through Isola Arts members. It is free, shaded, and one of the few genuinely quiet places on the barrier island in high season. Bring coffee, plan on forty minutes, leave with something small.
The second is a walk on Riomar Beach itself before the sand gets hot. The water here runs calm to medium, with sea grapes and native flora tight to the dune line. Sunrise is early enough in June and July that you can be back home before eight.
If breakfast is the plan, The Lemon Tree on Ocean Drive covers the classic diner side with pancakes and crab cakes, and it sits within the walkable strip.
Afternoons: A Short List for Long Days
Summer afternoons are for indoor volume or shaded water. Two options within a short drive that residents underuse:
- Vero Beach Museum of Art at 3001 Riverside Park Drive rotates exhibitions, workshops, and summer programming for families. It is climate controlled and rarely crowded on a Tuesday.
- McKee Botanical Garden keeps its own programming going through the season, including art exhibits under the subtropical canopy. This is where to take out of town guests who arrived expecting Miami and got Vero instead.
For a beach afternoon with food attached, Citrus Grill House has an oceanfront veranda a short walk from Riomar Beach access, and Mulligan's Beach House covers casual with a dock view. Neither requires a reservation before five.
If you have never done it, the Coastal Connections turtle team runs guided loggerhead nesting walks on the beach through the summer nights. Space is limited and it books out. Sign up in June for July dates. It is the single most Vero thing a resident can do, and most people who live in Riomar have never gone.
Evenings: The Ocean Drive Table
The oceanside dining strip is small enough that comparing the options directly is more useful than describing them one by one. Here is how the near-in choices actually differ on a summer night.

The pattern to notice: Riomar residents rotate between these on a two week cycle rather than picking a favorite. Ocean Grill for the anniversary. Heaton's when a band is on. The Tides when it is just two people and a Tuesday. Nino's when the grandkids are visiting. That rotation is what a compact restaurant row buys you.
Heaton's in particular runs a summer music calendar most weekends, and it has become the closest thing Ocean Drive has to a neighborhood porch. Firepit, ice cold cocktails, live local artists, and you can walk home from Riomar in flip flops.
For members, Riomar Country Club on Club Drive continues its own dining and social calendar through the summer with a quieter room than season would allow. The club describes itself as existing for the enjoyment of its members with a private oceanfront course. Non members will not find a workaround here, which is part of the point.
Dates Worth Circling Between Now and Labor Day

- Saturday, June 27 — 11th Annual Burgers and Brews Festival at the Indian River County Fairgrounds and Expo Center. Short drive from the island. Good with teenagers.
- Saturday, July 4 — USA All Day in downtown Vero Beach, with a morning parade at 8:30, all day festival at Riverview Park, and fireworks over Riverside Park at dusk. This year carries the added weight of the country's 250th.
- Saturday, July 4 — Swim to the Wreck at Sexton Plaza, 8 a.m. The original open water swim off the Riomar side of the beach. Walkable from most of the neighborhood.

Riverside Theatre's main stage picks back up in September, so August is the quiet month by design. That is a feature. Use it for the museum, the garden, and the turtles.
Newer Openings Worth the Bridge
Two Vero openings in the last year are drawing enough conversation that Riomar residents should know they exist, even though neither is on the island. Atmosphere at Vero has built a jazz and dinner niche that fills a real gap, and SaltBird Kitchen and Bar is showing up on most current best of lists for new restaurants in Vero. Both are the kind of place worth crossing the Merrill Barber for on a Friday, then coming home to the quiet side.
What Summer Reveals About the Neighborhood
Riomar's density of small, named places is a year round asset. Season hides it because everything is full and nothing feels like yours.
